Perennials For The Unmotivated

After much trial and error, I have determined the best perennials for gardeners who want maximum impact and low effort. For reference, I am in zone 5a.

  1. Coral Bells. These leafy plants come in multiple vibrant colors. I like to use them as a pet-friendly alternative to hostas. Part to full shade; zones 4–9.

  2. Lilacs. A classic for a reason. I enjoy the new Bloomerang variety that blooms twice per year. Full sun, zones 3–7.

  3. Stonecrop. Also known as sedum or “live forever,” my family has been propagating the same plant since the 1970s. If we can’t kill it, you can’t either. Full sun, zones 3-9.

  4. Yarrow. I could set this on fire with a flamethrower, and it would be perfectly fine in two days. Cut it back throughout the summer for more blooms. Full sun, zones 3-8.

  5. Garden Phlox. Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds are obsessed with this one. The cheerful pink color makes me happy. Full sun, zones 3-8.
